🏈 Former Ohio State quarterback Will Howard was hoping the Pittsburgh Steelers were going to draft him.
“I was hoping in my heart that they’d pick me. I know on that like ‘Hey Rookie’ show they showed a clip of me begging Pittsburgh to pick me just cause it’s a long three days and you never know what’s gonna happen, but I’m blessed man. I could not be in a better place, and Pittsburgh is gonna get my all every single day,” Howard said at Steelers rookie training camp on Friday.
🏈 Will Howard feels like the culture in Pittsburgh fits him perfectly.
“The culture, it just fits who I am as a person and who I am as a player. It’s close to home, I got a lot of connections to Pittsburgh. Coach Mike Tomlin, I wanted to play for him. Arthur and coach Arth. I knew coach Arth, he recruited me at Akron, and one of his players from John Carroll University coached me at Ohio State last year, so I have a lot of connections with him,” Howard said. “It’s just, everything kind of fell into place. As the draft went on, you never know where you’re gonna end up, but you keep a little spot in your heart for where you really wanna go, and I had a little soft spot for Pittsburgh.”
🏈 New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr announced his retirement after 11 seasons. Carr’s career ended early as a result of a right shoulder injury.
“Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I’ve decided to retire from the National Football League,” Carr said in a statement. “For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience. It’s difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us.”
With Carr retired, the Saints’ quarterback room now features rookie Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener.
🏈 Dallas Cowboys vice president of player personnel Will McClay discussed the trade for George Pickens on SiriusXM NFL Radio.
🏈 The Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs are the only NFL teams without a losing season in the last 10 years.
🏈 Ben Goessling of The Minnesota Star Tribune is hearing that the Minnesota Vikings will play the Pittsburgh Steelers in Ireland. The NFL will announce its International Games on Tuesday, May 13 on the Emmy-nominated Good Morning Football on NFL Network.
🏈 Matt Bowen of ESPN thinks Kaleb Johnson is a perfect fit with the Steelers.
“Johnson is at his best in the outside zone game, a foundational part of coordinator Arthur Smith’s offense. He presses the edges and is good at finding cutback lanes to get north-south with the ball. At 6-foot-1 and 224 pounds, he can also push through arm tackles for explosive plays,” Bowen wrote. “Johnson had 21 rushes of 20 or more yards in 2024, which was the second most nationally behind Ashton Jeanty. He’ll share the backfield with Jaylen Warren in Pittsburgh, but he could emerge as the early-down runner. In the pass game, Johnson will see targets on screens and swings.”
